Venetian plaster and microcement in Westmount

This is where Venetian plaster genuinely belongs. In a 1920s stone house with original mouldings and ten-foot ceilings, hand-burnished lime reads as part of the architecture in a way paint cannot imitate.

The housing stock in Westmount

Westmount, Mount Royal and Hampstead share a carefully maintained pre-war housing stock: stone and brick houses, plaster on wood lath, original millwork and mouldings. These interiors don't take well to work that erases existing character, and many owners rule out anything involving demolition from the first conversation. Venetian plaster runs the other way entirely: it's lime applied in thin coats over the existing plaster, in the same material family as what's already on the wall. The depth comes from burnishing by hand, not from an applied texture. Microcement still has a place here, but in the rebuilt parts of the house — basement, secondary bathroom, powder room.

What to plan for in Westmount

Two things specific to this area. First, original plaster on wood lath has to be checked before we start: hollow sections or active cracks get repaired, and that adds to the quote — we measure it on the visit rather than guessing remotely. Second, Westmount and Mount Royal have their own municipal by-laws, particularly on work hours and permits for exterior work. Our work is interior and generally needs no permit, but we keep to local hours.

Frequently asked questions — Westmount & Mount Royal

What's the difference between Venetian plaster and microcement?
Venetian is a lime finish for walls and ceilings, with a burnished depth. Microcement is a harder cement coating that also goes on floors and in showers. Venetian starts at $14/sq ft, microcement at $16/sq ft.
Can it go over original plaster on lath?
Yes, it's an excellent substrate — same material family. The plaster has to be sound first. We sound the walls during the visit and repair hollow sections before applying.
Is it reversible if a future buyer doesn't like it?
Venetian can be painted over like any plaster wall, with the right primer. It isn't an irreversible change to the building, unlike stripping out original plaster.
