The housing stock in Montreal
Montreal has the most varied housing stock in Quebec, which is exactly why microcement earns its place here. The 1910–1930 plexes have wood floors that have moved and bathrooms rebuilt three times over, where each new layer of tile raised the floor another half inch. Condos built after 2005 have the opposite problem: large concrete slabs and builder-grade 12x24 tile everywhere, perfectly serviceable and completely anonymous. In both cases, removing the existing surface costs more than coating it — and in a plex, removal often means disturbing structure you'd rather leave alone.

Two Montreal realities we plan around. In plexes, every bag of material goes up a narrow staircase by hand, usually with no elevator — we price that handling time into the quote instead of discovering it on site. In condo towers, the service elevator has to be booked and the building needs a certificate of insurance and our RBQ licence number before day one. We handle the paperwork, but it needs one to two weeks of notice.

Frequently asked questions — Montreal
- Can it go over the existing tile in a bathroom?
- Yes, and it's the most common job we do in Montreal. The tile has to be sound and well bonded. We degrease it, fill the grout lines, apply a bonding primer, then the microcement coats. If a few tiles sound hollow, we re-bond them first.
- How much will the floor height change?
- Roughly 2–3 mm in total. Thin enough that doors and baseboards stay where they are — which is not the case if you add another layer of tile.
- Do you work in buildings with a condo board?
- Yes. We provide our liability insurance certificate and RBQ licence number for the board's file, and we work within the hours the condo declaration allows.
